Coaching is part of a bigger picture of strategic planning, succession planning, messaging, employee development—I partner with clients in all these areas, and more. I work one-to-one, or with a highly effective model of group+121 (high-performance coaching). I work at high levels in organisations, and deploy other coaches, with similar values and skills, to work at all levels.
I also train coaches across these same markets and instil in them the value of creating value, not just following a method.
I have owned and run several companies, and still do. I have worked in 60+ countries, learned a few languages, and worked within various cultures and with many industries. (I am also a farmer and house-builder in New Zealand, when I have time.)

He was a huge help in me sending clear messages in what we were doing, why we were doing it and where we were heading to. We came out of the downturn stronger, kept our key staff and a couple of years later we bought by a large Japanese company which turbo boosted our growth.

We used Robert to help coach all the VPs that were ready to move to the next level of ED (SVP) myself included. The firm wanted to reinforce management skills and at the same time ensure a consistent style from the future leaders. This included how we approach difficult situations or staff, effective use of time with senior management, engagement with our teams and how to keep them motivated and manage upwards.

I had an employee that had an ongoing issue and I worked with HR for over 2 years. This consumed a lot of my time as I had meetings 1on1 with her daily, once a week with her and HR and a 1on1 with HR. In Japan, it is extremely difficult to fire someone and the process can drag on for years. After taking Robert's course and learning a different approach to take in order to handle the situation, the employee decided it was best to leave the firm after only a few months. Great outcome which freed up my time and reduced my stress greatly! In addition, I am up for promotion to ED this year and I am currently in the final rounds. I will find out early next year whether I made it but his advice and feedback has helped me in how I engage with senior management. This led to more face time with them and allowed me to explain what I was delivering for the firm. I believe this will lead to me getting ED.

I have taken other mentor and coaching courses in the past. However, Robert's approach is very different than others and he is extremely engaged. I am now managing major global projects. Regularly reporting and interacting comfortably with a much broader range of senior management than previously. I am regularly invited to present to not only managers within my domain reporting lines and peer groups, but also outside in other areas of the business. I have improved my efficiency levels organizing, and chairing meetings and my time keeping has improved significantly. My planning technique for meetings is vastly improved, in particular for those aspects which concern \' knowing and managing your audience\'. Although I still host a large number of calls, so I cannot state that the frequency is less, these meetings are now of a greater impact and influence and include a much higher percentage of Executive Director/Managing Director membership than previously. With a promotion I found that I needed to communicate with our Senior managers directly and more effectively. I found that I needed to engage and hold their interest while I explained relatively complex topics in a straight forward, simplified and clear way. Not a natural thing for me at the time.

Within a few sessions with Robert he was able to get me to recognise what my issues were and the impact that they would have and what I needed to do to resolve them. He helped me quickly make a step change in my communication delivery. My typical 30 mins 25 PowerPoint decks came down to a maximum of three pages and 10 mins maximum. Importantly I had learnt with Roberts guidance and feedback the level to pitch at so as to quickly gain agreement and support for what I was proposing. I have now passed the skills acquired to my team( as best I can) so they too will significantly improve how they communicate more effectively amongst the other functions.

Whilst we worked on one main deliverable in doing so Robert used a whole raft of exercises and experiences which helped me quickly improve a broad range of personal skills that I needed to be effective in my new role. Following an extended period of coaching with Robert Burnside and one of our leaders there has been significant and sustained improvement beyond what I would have thought possible from the point at which the coaching started. The said leader has worked hard on their communication style, put a lot of effort into constructing emails, they are much more considered in meetings and are trying hard to seek out and respect the views of others rather than steamrollering through. Perhaps most importantly the leader is working much more openly and collaboratively which I am sure can be felt by others and has a knock on positive effect on the work environment. I can feel others relaxing more around the leader, beginning to trust them and are much more open to sharing ideas and working together. Robert's work and influence on this leader has undoubtedly been a major contributor to the changes – the leader clearly respects Robert and has valued his input and counsel through the coaching – the leader often refers to Robert when explaining their changed behaviour. Given my long academic teaching background, I wanted to move in a new professional direction. Coaching looked attractive since I have had experience conducting corporate training programs.

I was able to change my questioning style by asking short open ended questions. I could practice active listening by controlling mental distractions. I was able to practice coaching with three individuals after the training program.

Executive coaching is a new professional direction for me. I was looking for a high quality training program conducted by a theoretically informed and a practically experienced executive coach. I found the 4-day Certified Executive Coach program conducted by Robert Burnside the kind of program I really wanted. I liked the high quality of the program, providing me a solid foundation for my initial training for executive coaching. During the course of Robert’s sessions, I clearly learned about the meanings and goals of executive coaching, the nature of the relationship between a coach and a coachee, and the ethical standards and respect for the coachee that need to be maintained. Robert also introduced and explained some very useful tool kits that a coach can use to move from personal coaching into the mindsets and complexities of real business. The sessions were highly interactive, with plenty of coaching practice. I learned and experienced what listening involves, and how as a coach I should not rush while coaching. I was able to understand and feel what the mindset of an executive coach should be like. As a practicing coach, Robert shared his experiences providing valuable insights into the world of coaching. In particular, Robert provided information and insights into the world of marketing for executive coaches, and how we could engage with potential clients. The experiences of the participants were nicely incorporated in our discussions. We learned a great deal about the current situation for executive coaching in Japan, and its challenges and opportunities. Robert played the role of a teacher and a trainer while conducting his sessions. But, more importantly, I felt he coached us. I felt we were his clients, and he engaged with us, and facilitated our learning process. I was able to experience the process of coaching. I felt engaged as a client. I felt I discovered on my own the business values of these sessions to me. I also liked Robert’s availability and willingness to guide us further as we continue with our executive coaching training. Robert conducted his sessions at his house in a scenic mountainous area. The pacing was intensive and focused, and yet the atmosphere throughout the sessions was friendly and relaxed. By completing this program, I strongly feel I have started well moving in a new professional direction and have a clearer understanding of the path and the steps I could take in the future.
